Across America people are concerned about the actions of wealthy and powerful people suppressing votes, removing voters from voter registration lists, putting up obstacles to make it difficult to even register to vote, eliminating voter protections in place since the 1960s. Secretly lobbying government agencies to reduce healthcare access and benefits, lobbying to reduce and eliminate long held consumer protections, corporate interests pressing government officials to eliminate environmental safe guards in place since the 1970s. Working to reduce and eliminate consumer protection laws in place since the 1970s and 1980s. Working to wipeout civil rights advances dating back to the 1950s, 60s, and more recent advances in the current millennium.
This is happening locally in Flagstaff and around Arizona too. Witness wealthy or want to be wealthy business owners spending hundreds, and thousands of dollars to overturn citizens initiatives raising the state and local minimum wage. Legislators working to limit voting access to the states indigenous nations members, and working to allow further destruction along the southern border with legislation declaring environmental protections illegal to allow for construction of the glorified border fence desecrating ancient indigenous sacred sites – including ancestral graves…
A group of enterprising musical artists have rewritten Don McClean’s “American Pie”, a song that spoke about American social fabric of the 1950s and early 60s. Calling themselves The Founding Fathers they have hit the nail on the head with “The Day Democracy Died” with a new rendition which speaks to the current state of American and worldwide apprehension.
“Some of the Founders and Framers of the Constitution did more than turn over in their graves… they actually resurfaced to sing “The Day Democracy Died.” That, plus they “dig those rhythm and blues! SUBSCRIBE ‘CAUSE THERE’S MORE TO COME!” – The Founding Fathers
From Portland my old friend Robyn Shanti (who brought the song to my attention) had this to say, “This is THIS moment’s “Alice’s Restaurant” set to the tune of American Pie (one of the all time great songs). I want every musician I know to learn it and spread the song…PLEASE! This really needs to be shared!!!!!”
Check out “The Day Democracy Died” and don’t despair, just go vote.
Be sure you’re registered. It’s easy to be kicked off the rolls without knowing it. I just found that I was removed from the rolls because the Coconino County Voter Registrars Office had not processed a change of address. Took two days of work to get that fixed. In AZ we have just two days from now to get registered or have registration updated.
