The national and local response to COVID-19 is rapidly changing and the Flagstaff Family Food Center is being responsive to these changes. Here is our most recent update:
- To comply with CDC guidelines of avoiding gathering in groups of 50 or more, the daily hot meal at the Kitchen location will transition to a to-go style dinner consisting of meat sandwiches, fruits, and vegetables beginning on Thursday, March 19th.
- The Reading Room is closed as of Tuesday, March 17th, at least until FUSD resumes classes. The Easter party on April 3rd is canceled. The Food Center will be handing out Easter baskets instead.
- The drive-through Emergency Food Box Program at the Food Bank location continues as normal. Today, the car line for emergency food boxes was three times as long as anyone has ever seen it, highlighting the extreme need for food assistance during this uncertain and unprecedented time. The Food Center asks for help, volunteers to help run this program, as we anticipate the need continuing to grow as the crisis continues.
- How can you help? The center needs healthy volunteers who have not traveled recently to help continue the vital services, including packing emergency food boxes, loading cars, making sandwiches, and prepping and/or handing out dinner. - The most-needed shifts are labeled as “Response Team.” While the food center has emergency systems in place to deal with unexpected challenges like COVID-19, they anticipate a significant strain on resources as the crisis continues. While this pandemic creates challenges for all of us, we know that our most vulnerable neighbors will be especially hard hit – particularly seniors and families with school-age children who depend on school meals.
